Senior Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said the country’s upcoming parliamentary election will be a decisive moment in determining whether Bangladesh continues on a liberal democratic path or moves in a more extremist direction.

Speaking on Tuesday at a discussion organised in Dhaka’s Kakrail area, the BNP secretary general described the election as a critical test for the future character of the state.

At a meeting at the Institution of Diploma Engineers to mark the birth anniversary of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, Fakhrul said that the party was ready to accept the results of the election, whether they put them in power or not.

He questioned what he called "heated political rhetoric" before the election, saying that people should be able to freely say what they want.

He also said that the contest would show if Bangladesh's government stays rooted in democratic principles, pluralism and the public good.

Fakhrul urged voters to support what he called a liberal and democratic vision, warning against the influence of radical or anti-state elements.

He said the BNP’s reform agenda, including a 31-point programme and an eight-point initiative announced by the party chairman Tarique Rahman, should be communicated clearly to the public. The proposals include social welfare measures aimed at households and farmers, which party leaders say are linked to broader goals of economic stability, energy affordability and sustainable development.

Political analysts note that the election debate is increasingly intersecting with policy questions beyond politics, including energy security, cost-of-living pressures and environmental resilience. As Bangladesh faces rising energy demand and climate-related challenges, the direction of governance is expected to influence long-term planning in power generation, resource management and public investment.

Fakhrul further said that a victory in the forthcoming election would represent a tribute to Ziaur Rahman and the party’s former chairperson Khaleda Zia, underlining the symbolic importance the BNP attaches to the polls as Bangladesh approaches a pivotal moment in its political and policy trajectory.
