Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has said the party would address existing challenges in the country’s salt industry if it returns to power following the upcoming general elections.
Salahuddin Ahmed made the remarks during an unannounced visit to a salt field in the Magnama Launch Ghat area of Pekua upazila in Cox’s Bazar on Friday morning, at the start of the second day of his election campaign.
The BNP leader, who is contesting the Cox’s Bazar-1 (Chakaria-Pekua) constituency, met salt workers at the site, exchanged greetings and interacted with them during the visit.
Addressing workers engaged in salt production, Salahuddin Ahmed said BNP governments in the past had ensured fair prices for salt and pledged to restore that system if the party forms the next government.
“During BNP’s tenure, we ensured a fair price of salt. If BNP comes to power again, fair prices will be ensured once more,” he said.
Seeking support for the BNP’s electoral symbol, the sheaf of paddy, Salahuddin Ahmed said his party remained committed to protecting the interests of workers and farmers.
“No one except BNP truly works for the welfare of the people,” he said. “If BNP is voted to power, it will work in the interests of salt farmers, farmers across the country, and the nation as a whole.”
Later in the day, Salahuddin Ahmed addressed a rally in the Surajpur-Manikpur area of Chakaria as part of his campaign activities.
The BNP is stepping up outreach to different occupational groups as election campaigning gathers pace ahead of the polls.
