Hasan Molla, a local leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has died from gunshot wounds sustained in an attack earlier this week in Keraniganj on the outskirts of Dhaka, party officials and family members have confirmed.

The 45-year-old, who served as general secretary of the BNP’s Hazratpur Union unit, died at a private hospital in the capital at around 3:00 pm on Saturday, after spending more than two days in critical condition.

The shooting took place on Thursday night at approximately 8:45 pm, when unidentified assailants opened fire on Hasan Molla outside the BNP office in Ward No. 9 of Jagannathpur village under Hazratpur Union. He was seriously injured in the attack and was initially taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital before being transferred to another facility for advanced treatment.

Nazim Uddin, vice president of Keraniganj Model Upazila BNP and Hasan Molla’s brother-in-law, confirmed the death, saying doctors were unable to save him despite intensive medical care.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and no arrests have been announced. Law enforcement authorities have yet to release details about any suspects or the progress of the investigation.

In the aftermath of the shooting, BNP leaders and activists organised protest marches in the Jagannathpur area, demanding the arrest and prosecution of those responsible. Demonstrators condemned what they described as a growing pattern of violence targeting opposition figures and called on authorities to ensure accountability.

The killing adds to wider concerns over political security at the local level, particularly as parties intensify activities ahead of national elections. BNP officials said Hasan Molla had been actively involved in organisational work in the area, and they described his death as a significant loss for the party.

Police say they are continuing to investigate the incident.
