Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday said that restoring peace is the country’s most urgent need, asserting that only the BNP is capable of ensuring stability.
"BNP is a proven party, and I am personally known to you. I have worked with you for a long time and have never abandoned you," he said, adding that if elected in the upcoming election, he would work for the overall development of Thakurgaon.
He was addressing a public meeting in the afternoon during his election campaign at Molani Bazar in Chilarang Union of Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila.
Mirza Fakhrul alleged that in previous elections people were deprived of their voting rights, claiming that votes had been "taken away by the fascist Sheikh Hasina."
"This time, we are optimistic for a proper election where voters will be able to freely exercise their franchise and vote for the candidate of their choice," he said.
Referring to his election pledges, the BNP leader said that new industries would be established, modern hospitals would be built to improve healthcare services, medicines would be made available at affordable prices and initiatives would be taken to further strengthen the police force to maintain law and order.
Terming the upcoming election as the final election of his life, Mirza Fakhrul appealed to voters for their support.
"This is my last vote, the last election of my life. I seek your support so that I can serve you one more time," he said.
Leaders and activists of the BNP joined the gathering.
