Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Monday said Bangladesh needs a new political direction grounded in justice, dignity, and accountable leadership to meet the expectations of its people, particularly the youth and future generations.

Addressing an election rally at Cox’s Bazar-2 (Maheshkhali–Kutubdia) constituency, he said the ongoing political movement is not about capturing state power but about restoring people’s rights and self-respect through honest and people-oriented governance.

“The country needs patriotic and sincere leadership that prioritises the welfare of citizens over personal or party interests,” he said, stressing the importance of inclusive leadership for national progress.

Dr Shafiqur Rahman paid homage to those killed and injured during the July movement, including martyr Tanvir Siddiqui, saying their sacrifices played a crucial role in steering the country out of a deep political crisis.

Highlighting the strategic importance of Maheshkhali and Kutubdia, he said initiatives such as the Matarbari deep-sea port, economic zones, and energy projects could transform the region into a major economic centre and generate extensive employment if managed transparently and efficiently.

He said a Jamaat-led 12-party alliance government would prioritise addressing local challenges to improve livelihoods and enhance living standards in the coastal region.

“Young people are not asking for handouts; they want justice, dignity and meaningful employment,” he said, adding that sustainable job creation must replace dependence on allowances.

Alleging large-scale money laundering, the Jamaat chief said those involved must be brought to justice, pledging that any recovered funds would be channelled into balanced development, especially in deprived and neglected areas.

He also reaffirmed Jamaat’s commitment to ensuring the dignity, safety and security of women in households, public spaces and workplaces, saying employment opportunities would be provided based on merit and patriotism, irrespective of religious identity.

Calling for unity, Dr Shafiqur Rahman urged voters to stay alert against any attempts to manipulate votes and to support justice, transparency and good governance to build a united and prosperous Bangladesh.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General AHM Hamidur Rahman Azad has been nominated as the Jamaat-led alliance candidate for the Cox’s Bazar-2 constituency.
