BNP Secretary General and the party-nominated candidate for Thakurgaon-1 constituency Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday said the Liberation War of 1971 is inseparable from Bangladesh’s national identity, warning that any attempt to diminish its significance threatens the very existence of the nation.

Addressing an election campaign organised by BNP’s Thakurgaon municipality Ward-6 unit at noon, Fakhrul said certain vested quarters are deliberately trying to push the spirit of 1971 into the background.

“1971 gave us a country, a homeland and the opportunity to move forward as a nation. Without recognising that history, our future generations will lose their direction,” he said.

Fakhrul also said that the ideals of the Liberation War opened doors to progress and laid the foundation for building a prosperous future for children and youth.

He alleged that some groups are now attempting to confuse people through the misuse of religion and the spread of false narratives, creating uncertainty among voters ahead of the national election.

“The vote is not an ordinary matter; it is a sacred trust of the people,” Fakhrul said, adding that elections held every five years must ensure that this trust is neither manipulated nor wasted.

He urged voters to remain vigilant and make informed decisions so that those elected truly uphold the people’s mandate and safeguard democratic values.

Thakurgaon District BNP leaders, activists and a large number of local residents were present at the campaign, which concluded with calls for unity to protect the spirit of the Liberation War and democratic rights.
