US-based magazine The Diplomat has predicted that Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairman Tarique Rahman is poised to become Bangladesh’s next prime minister following the 12 February election.
The analysis, published on Wednesday, cites multiple opinion polls indicating Tarique’s strong lead over rival parties.
Titled “An Interview with Tarique Rahman – Likely Bangladesh’s Next Prime Minister”, the article highlights Tarique Rahman’s position as the frontrunner, following similar assessments by Bloomberg, TIME and The Economist.
A December survey showed the BNP with around 70 per cent support, while Jamaat-e-Islami trailed at 19 per cent.
Another poll indicated that 47 per cent of respondents see Tarique Rahman as the next premier, with 22.5 per cent favouring Jamaat Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman.
The report emphasises the role of Gen Z voters, who are expected to shape the election outcome.
“A large portion of voters in this election are from Gen Z, meaning Bangladesh’s youth will decide the next prime minister,” the magazine noted, observing strong youth participation in BNP rallies led by Tarique Rahman.
In an interview conducted while traveling to campaign stops in Tangail and Sirajganj, Tarique said his team engages closely with Gen Z through a programme called The Plan, where students share ideas and concerns.
He stressed priorities such as job creation, technical education, sports, IT sector development and improving the job market.
On foreign policy, Tarique Rahman outlined a “Bangladesh First” approach, emphasising national interest, mutual respect and economic diplomacy.
He also addressed economic growth, stating that while reaching a trillion-dollar GDP may be challenging, it is achievable through investment in IT, semiconductors, light engineering, SMEs and the food sector.
Tarique Rahman detailed plans for climate adaptation, pledging to excavate 20,000 km of canals, plant 250 million trees, and mobilise global climate funds.
Regarding electoral pledges, he said BNP will focus on implementing its 31-point charter, prioritising family cards, farmer cards, health care, employment and education.
“The reality is stark: positive change requires action. We will uphold the people’s aspirations and establish their power. This is my commitment to the people of Bangladesh,” he concluded.
