Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Saturday said Sylhet’s Osmani International Airport would be transformed into a full-fledged international airport if his party comes to power.
Addressing an election rally at Kulaura in Moulvibazar, he said Bangladesh is lagging behind despite rapid global progress, stressing the need for visionary and honest leadership to move the country forward.
“Regular international flights to major global destinations, including Manchester, will be launched and will not be allowed to be discontinued under any circumstances. If they are stopped, they will be resumed,” he said.
Dr Shafiqur Rahman added that eliminating corruption would significantly boost national productivity and inject new momentum into industry and the economy.
Highlighting the role of young people, he said the future of Bangladesh rests on its youth. “The youth are Bangladesh - this is not mere rhetoric; it comes from the heart,” he said.
Expressing strong commitment to tea workers, the Jamaat Ameer described Moulvibazar as the capital of the tea industry.
“If I forget the tea workers, I will be forgetting myself,” he said, pledging to ensure healthcare and quality education for their children.
“So that even the child of a tea worker can dream of becoming prime minister, responsibility must be taken not only by tea garden owners but also by the state,” he added.
Referring to Kulaura as his birthplace, Dr Shafiqur Rahman said the area has long been deprived of expected development.
He urged voters to support Jamaat-nominated candidate Engineer Sayed Ali, saying a vote for him would be equivalent to voting for Jamaat’s broader vision for development.
