Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Saturday framed his party as a guardian of good governance rather than a traditional ruler, pledging to safeguard citizens’ dignity, ensure justice, and curb corruption if entrusted with power.

“I stand here not just as Jamaat’s ameer, but as a son of Sylhet, among my own people,” Shafiqur told supporters at the Government Alia Madrasa ground in Sylhet.

The rally was organised by the district and metropolitan units of the party, where he served as the chief guest.

Shafiqur urged voters to support Jamaat, saying, “We will not claim ownership of the country; our role is to act as its watchmen. Protecting the rights and dignity of all citizens is our foremost commitment.”

He added that, under Jamaat’s stewardship, Bangladesh could see meaningful transformation within five years, with the aspirations of the younger generation becoming a visible reality.

Addressing long-standing governance issues, he highlighted Sylhet’s underdeveloped infrastructure, polluted rivers, and widespread drug problems.

“We will dredge rivers, restore electricity and gas access, and make Bangladesh river-friendly,” he said.

Shafiqur also promised to eliminate bribery and extortion, warning that those who have misused public resources will be held accountable.

On regional development, he criticised Sylhet’s international airport for lacking operational global flights and pledged to make it fully functional.

The rally, presided over by Sylhet Metropolitan Jamaat Ameer Mohammad Fakhrul Islam, also featured speeches from leaders of the 11-party alliance and senior Jamaat officials.

Shafiqur concluded the event by introducing the party’s candidates for various Sylhet constituencies, underlining Jamaat’s focus on oversight, accountability, and structural reforms rather than short-term political gains.
