Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has expressed profound shock at the death of July fighter Ashraful, who passed away in the morning while undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the National Institute of Neurosciences Hospital.
In a condolence message, he said, “On 5 August 2024, during the student–people’s uprising at Mirpur-10 in Dhaka, Ashraful was shot in the head. He was first treated in the country and later sent to Thailand for advanced treatment, where he remained in ICU for 14 months. After returning home on 4 February this year, he was admitted again to the ICU of the Neurosciences Hospital.”
“Today, he has passed away (Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un). I express deep sorrow at his demise,” the statement reads.
“Many July fighters are still under treatment in hospitals, and their suffering is ongoing. Ashraful is one of those who gave their lives and made sacrifices for the new Bangladesh. The nation will remember them with full respect,” according to the condolence letter.
Dr Shafiqur Rahman prayed for Ashraful’s forgiveness and acceptance as a martyr and conveyed heartfelt sympathy to his bereaved family and fellow fighters.
