BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday cast his vote at Thakurgaon Government Girls High School polling centre after offering prayers at his parents’ grave.

Speaking to local journalists afterwards, he said, “A new journey of democracy has begun. We hope that this path will be smooth and will lead our politics, economy, and country towards its intended goal.”

He added, “We have achieved this day through many struggles and at the cost of blood. In 17 years, millions of people have been killed, disappeared, and subjected to oppression. Today, people have achieved their right to vote.”

Fakhrul expressed hope that the election would be fair, free and impartial, marking the beginning of a new chapter for Bangladesh.

Responding to questions about some incidents the previous night, he said, “Some evil forces who want to sabotage the elections are doing these things. We hope they will be defeated.”

Expressing optimism about their success, Fakhrul said, “We will win under the leadership of Tarique Rahman. Good governance and a smooth democratic system will be established in the country.”
