The Secretary General of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, has described the ongoing national election as “remarkable”, stating the voting atmosphere was far more festive than anyone had anticipated.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday afternoon at the Thakurgaon Government Boys’ High School polling centre, Mirza Fakhrul expressed confidence that the country is on the brink of establishing a democratically elected government, a milestone he says the nation has awaited for over a decade.

“None had imagined the voting would be so festive. The enthusiasm and interest of the people are remarkable,” Mirza Fakhrul said.

The senior political figure spent the day touring approximately 100 polling stations across the region. He reported that the process had been conducted “peacefully and beautifully”, a significant observation given the political tension often associated with general elections in the region.

‘Struggle of 16 Years’

Mirza Fakhrul, who is contesting a seat in the district, expressed strong optimism regarding his party’s chances and the broader outcome for the nation.

“This year, the people will get an elected government and parliament, something we have struggled for over the past 16 years,” he stated. “I believe the results will be positive.”

Thakurgaon, a key northern district, has seen active political engagement this election cycle. According to local sources, a total of 20 candidates, including two women, are vying for the three parliamentary constituencies within the district.

The comments from the BNP leader mark a shift in tone, pointing towards a cautiously optimistic outlook for the country’s return to a fully representative legislative process.
