Jamaat-backed candidate Shishir Monir has conceded defeat in the Sunamganj-2 constituency following a strong showing by BNP nominee Nasir Uddin Chowdhury in the 13th National Parliamentary Election.
Shishir Monir formally acknowledged the outcome in a Facebook post from his verified page at around 8pm on Thursday. In his message, he congratulated his rival as unofficial results indicated a decisive margin in Nasir’s favour.
According to the latest unofficial tally from 82 out of 111 polling centres, Nasir Uddin Chowdhury, contesting with the “Dhaner Shish” (Sheaf of Paddy) symbol, secured 74,289 votes. In contrast, Shishir Monir, who ran with the “Daripalla” (Scales) symbol, received 42,467 votes - trailing by 31,822 votes. With only 29 centres remaining to report, the margin made a reversal highly unlikely.
Earlier in the evening, at approximately 7:36pm, when results from 41 centres showed Nasir ahead by 18,700 votes, Shishir had already indicated acceptance of the emerging trend.
In his congratulatory message, he wrote, “Congratulations to Mr Nasir Uddin Chowdhury, the winning candidate of Dhaner Shish symbol in my constituency. Warm floral greetings to you.”
The concession brings clarity to the contest in Sunamganj-2 as counting of remaining votes continues.
