Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Secretary General of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), said on Friday that the party will form the government in collaboration with those who participated alongside it in simultaneous street movements in the past.

“We have always remained steadfast in our commitments. We said we would contest the election with those with whom we carried out simultaneous street movements in earlier days, and we will form the government with them,” he told journalists at his residence in Kalibari.

Referring to BNP’s unprecedented victory, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the result reflects the party’s enduring popularity. “Since Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman founded the party, BNP has remained with the people and pursued citizen-orientated politics—this is our greatest political strength,” he said.

He emphasised that BNP is a people-based, not cadre-based, party, working for citizens both in and outside government. “The party’s manifesto, vision, state reform proposals, demands, and points were accepted by the people, which has resulted in today’s landslide victory,” he added.

Asked about the rise of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said it was a consequence of 15 years of fascist rule. “It is a principle of political science that whenever democracy is suppressed and its voice stifled, extremist forces rise. The rise of Jamaat today has happened because of the Awami League’s repression, preventing opposition parties from working or contesting elections,” he said.

He added that the people have already rejected such forces, while BNP has secured a two-thirds majority. “I am confident that the people of Bangladesh will continue to resist all ill tendencies through honest and welfare-orientated politics,” he said.

Also present at the meeting were District BNP General Secretary Poygam Ali, party leaders at various levels, and journalists from print and electronic media.
