BNP wins all six seats in Barishal

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) achieved a clean sweep in Barishal, winning all six parliamentary constituencies in the 13th National Parliamentary Election.

Barishal District Returning Officer and Deputy Commissioner Khairul Alam Sumon formally declared the results at around 3:30pm on Friday, following consolidation of reports from all constituencies.

In Barishal-1, BNP Chairperson's Adviser Zahir Uddin Swapan, contesting with the party’s “Sheaf of Paddy” symbol, won 1,00,552 votes, defeating Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Md Kamrul Islam Khan, who received 46,263 votes. Swapan pledged to focus on education and agriculture while representing all constituents.

Barishal-2 (Banaripara-Uzirpur) saw Sardar Sarfuddin Ahmed Santu secure 1,41,622 votes, outpacing Abdul Mannan’s 74,082 votes. Santu vowed to combat corruption, terrorism and discrimination in the constituency.

In Barishal-3 (Babuganj-Muladi), BNP Vice-Chairman Zainul Abedin claimed 80,930 votes, defeating Barrister Asaduzzaman Bhuiyan of the 11-party alliance, who obtained 61,192 votes. Zainul Abedin said he would prioritise river erosion control, infrastructure and job creation.

Barishal-4 (Hijla-Mehendiganj) elected Md Rajib Ahsan, central general secretary of Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal, with 1,28,322 votes against Md Abdul Jabbar’s 74,684. Ahsan emphasised development initiatives in char areas, education and healthcare.

In Barishal-5 (Sadar-Mahanagar), Advocate Mujibur Rahman Sarwar secured his fifth term with 1,35,146 votes, defeating Mufti Faizul Karim of Islami Andolan Bangladesh, who received 95,044 votes. Sarwar pledged to focus on urban development, employment and improved civic services.

Finally, Barishal-6 (Bakerganj) went to BNP District Convener Abul Hossain Khan, who received 82,217 votes, beating Jamaat candidate Md Mahmudunnabi’s 55,988 votes. Abul Hossain Khan promised development for underprivileged communities, especially in agriculture and fisheries.

District Returning Officer Khairul Alam Sumon said the election in Barishal was conducted peacefully, with no major incidents, in a fair and orderly environment.

The BNP’s clean sweep in all six constituencies marks a significant shift in the district’s political landscape and strengthens the party’s overall mandate in the national parliament.
