National Citizen Party (NCP) Spokesperson Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain on Sunday announced that the party is preparing to form a “shadow cabinet” to monitor government activities and ensure accountability.
In a statement posted on his verified Facebook page, Asif Mahmud said the proposed shadow cabinet will function as a vigilant body to oversee the operations of the new government, emphasising transparency and responsible governance.
“The shadow cabinet will act as a watchdog, ensuring that all actions and policies of the government are conducted openly and in accordance with democratic principles,” he wrote.
He added that the initiative is part of the party’s broader strategy to strengthen institutional checks and balances while providing constructive oversight on national policy matters.
The NCP leader also indicated that the party may reconsider its participation in the upcoming swearing-in ceremony of the new cabinet, scheduled for Tuesday, if Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi attends the event.
“We will review our position on attending the oath-taking ceremony depending on the participation of international dignitaries, particularly the Prime Minister of India,” he said.
The oath-taking ceremony, to be held at the South Plaza of the National Parliament, will see President Mohammed Shahabuddin administering the oath to newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs) and cabinet members.
The NCP’s announcement comes amid heightened political attention following BNP’s landslide victory in the 13th Parliamentary Election.
By forming a shadow cabinet, the NCP aims to play a proactive role in parliamentary affairs while holding the government accountable, signalling the party’s intent to act as a responsible opposition force in the country’s political landscape.
