Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairman Tarique Rahman has decided to vacate his Bogura-6 parliamentary seat, choosing to take oath as a member of parliament from the Dhaka-17 constituency on Tuesday.

“We have received an official letter from Tarique Rahman indicating that he resigns from the Bogura-6 seat,” said Election Commission (EC) Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed on Monday.

The next step involves publishing a gazette to formally declare the Bogura-6 seat vacant, opening the way for a by-election in the constituency.

Tarique was elected from two constituencies in the recent 13th National Parliamentary Election held on Thursday: Bogura-6 and Dhaka-17. Following the announcement of results, the EC had published a gazette on Friday, listing 297 elected MPs.

The polls in Chattogram-2 and Chattogram-4 remain withheld due to ongoing court orders, while the Sherpur-3 election had previously been cancelled after the death of a candidate.

The newly elected parliamentarians, including Tarique, are scheduled to take their oaths on Tuesday as members of the 13th Parliament and the Constitution Reform Council.

In the historic election, the BNP secured a commanding majority with 209 parliamentary seats, while Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami captured 68.

Tarique Rahman’s decision to retain Dhaka-17 ensures he will represent the capital region, while Bogura-6 will go to a by-election, allowing voters there to elect a new representative.
