Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairman Tarique Rahman has met Islami Andolan Bangladesh (IAB) Ameer Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim in Dhaka, a day before he is set to form the country’s next government following his party’s decisive victory in the national election.

Tarique Rahman arrived at Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim’s residence in Siddheswari at around 7:15pm on Monday. The meeting was described by BNP leaders as a courtesy call and a positive political gesture after the polls.

According to BNP Media Cell member Atikur Rahman Rumon, Tarique Rahman was welcomed with floral wreaths by the IAB Ameer’s brothers upon arrival. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir accompanied him during the visit.

The meeting is part of a series of engagements by Tarique Rahman with leaders of other political parties following Thursday’s parliamentary election, in which BNP secured an overwhelming majority.

On Sunday, Tarique Rahman also paid courtesy calls on Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman and National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam.

In the election, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami won 68 seats, the National Citizen Party secured six seats, and Islami Andolan Bangladesh won one seat.

Political observers say the meetings indicate efforts to maintain communication and cooperation among parties represented in parliament as the new administration prepares to assume office.

Tarique Rahman is expected to formally take charge as prime minister after the completion of constitutional procedures related to the formation of the new government.
