The newly elected members of parliament (MPs) of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in the 13th national elections took their oath of office at the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) on Tuesday.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin administered the oath to the lawmakers at the Oath Taking Room of Sangsad Bhaban at 12:22 pm.

Secretary to the Bangladesh Parliament Secretariat Kaniz Moula conducted the ceremony, after which the lawmakers signed the oath book.

The Jamaat-e-Islami MPs first swore in as members of parliament and subsequently as members of the Constitutional Reform Council.

Earlier on Tuesday, the newly elected MPs of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party had taken their oath at the same venue at 10:43 am. The oath was administered by the CEC, while the ceremony was conducted by Kaniz Moula.

According to official results, the BNP won 209 seats on its own in the Jatiya Sangsad polls held on 12 February. In addition, its political allies — Gano Odhikar Parishad, Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) and Gano Sanghati Andolon — each secured one seat.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami claimed 68 seats, emerging as the main opposition party, while its alliance partners—National Citizen Party (NCP), Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis and Khelafat Majlish—won six, two and one seat, respectively.

Islami Andolon Bangladesh secured one seat, and independent candidates won in seven constituencies.

On Friday night, the Election Commission published the gazette for 297 of the 299 parliamentary seats in the 13th polls.

The announcement for two seats—Chattogram-2 and Chattogram-4—was postponed due to legal issues, while voting in Sherpur-3 was delayed following the death of a Jamaat-e-Islami candidate.
