Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and the opposition leader in the 13th Parliament Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Wednesday reiterated that his party would not give any concessions if the commitments outlined in the July Charter are not fully implemented.
Speaking to reporters after participating in a cleanliness drive in the capital’s Mirpur, the opposition leader stressed that the spirit of the July Uprising, which paved the way for the 2026 national election, must guide the work of lawmakers in Parliament.
“Jamaat will continue to raise its voice to ensure the realisation of the movement’s objectives,” Shafiqur Rahman said, “If July had not come, Tarique Rahman would not have become Prime Minister, and I would not have assumed the role of leader of the opposition.”
The Jamaat leader emphasised that state reforms and the fight against corruption remain central to the party’s agenda.
“Comprehensive restructuring will be carried out to eliminate all levels of corruption and decay from the country,” he said.
He added, “Cleanliness brings peace of mind. On Tuesday, we took two oaths - as members of Parliament and as part of the Constitutional Reform Council - and our pledge is to serve the people of Bangladesh.”
Earlier in the day, Shafiqur Rahman took part in a cleanliness campaign at the Baitun Noor Mosque area, located near Monipur High School (Main Girls’ Branch) in Mirpur, Dhaka, following Fajr prayers. The campaign, he said, reflects Jamaat’s commitment to civic responsibility and a cleaner, more disciplined society alongside its political objectives.
