National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener and opposition Chief Whip of Parliament Md Nahid Islam has called for the impeachment and possible legal proceedings against President Md Sahabuddin, alleging that he failed to prevent the July 2024 violence and should be held accountable for the consequences.
Nahid Islam made the remarks on Wednesday after paying tribute at the graves of the Pilkhana massacre martyrs at Banani Military Graveyard in Dhaka.
He said the President bears responsibility for not taking adequate steps during the crisis period and cannot avoid scrutiny over the events that unfolded.
“The President did not act decisively to stop the bloodshed in July 2024. Accountability must follow responsibility,” he stated, urging lawmakers to initiate impeachment proceedings in parliament’s upcoming session and demanding further legal examination of the matter.
His statement comes amid growing political debate triggered by a recent newspaper interview in which the president reportedly discussed sensitive state issues.
The remarks have drawn criticism from several political quarters, who argue that public disclosure of confidential matters raises constitutional concerns.
Separately, Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar issued a statement accusing the president of breaching his oath by revealing internal state affairs during the interview.
He argued that the presidency carries constitutional obligations that require discretion and protection of classified information.
Golam Parwar warned that such actions risk undermining institutional credibility and creating uncertainty regarding constitutional continuity.
He stressed that leaders holding the highest office must preserve the dignity of the state and strictly adhere to their sworn responsibilities.
