Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Wednesday paid homage to the army officers killed in the 2009 Pilkhana tragedy by visiting their graves at Banani Military Graveyard in the capital.
Arriving at the graveyard around noon, he offered prayers for the eternal peace of the departed souls of the officers who lost their lives during the mutiny at the then Bangladesh Rifles headquarters in Pilkhana, now known as Border Guard Bangladesh.
Dr Shafiqur Rahman was accompanied by members of the party’s central executive council, including Dhaka North City Ameer Md Selim Uddin, as well as leaders and activists from Banani and Gulshan units of Jamaat.
Speaking to family members of the slain officers, he recalled that 74 people, including 57 army officers, were killed during the two-day violence on 25-26 February 2009.
He described the victims as devoted patriots and valuable assets of the nation.
“We remember them with deep respect and pray that Almighty Allah grants them eternal peace and gives strength to their families,” he said.
He further stated that the nation deserves to know the full truth behind the killings and urged the authorities to make public the names of those identified in the report of the BDR Investigation Commission.
He called for swift legal action and exemplary punishment for those found responsible.
