Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of the Opposition Dr Shafiqur Rahman has said his party will adopt a constructive approach in the National Parliament rather than functioning as a traditional opposition that resists the government on all issues.
He made the remarks on Saturday while addressing party leaders and supporters at an iftar gathering organised by Jamaat, outlining the party’s parliamentary stance in the current political landscape.
Dr Shafiqur Rahman said that after nearly 18 years of political division and confrontation, the people of Bangladesh are seeking unity and stability.
Reflecting that public sentiment, he said Jamaat does not intend to oppose government measures simply for political positioning.
“We will not engage in opposition for the sake of opposition,” he said, adding that Jamaat would extend cooperation to any initiative that promotes national welfare, democratic values, and sustainable development.
At the same time, he made it clear that the party would not hesitate to criticise or resist policies that it believes undermine public interest or contradict national priorities.
According to him, responsible opposition means balancing cooperation with accountability.
Dr Shafiqur said his comments were meant to reassure citizens that Jamaat aims to play a mature and principled role in parliament, contributing to constructive debate and effective policymaking.
He emphasised that strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring good governance require collaboration across party lines, while maintaining the right to dissent when necessary.
