National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam has urged party leaders and activists to begin organisational preparations for the upcoming local government elections, expressing optimism that the polls will be held in the near future.

He made the call on Saturday evening while addressing an iftar programme at Dhanmondi in the capital organised to mark the party’s first founding anniversary.

Nahid said that although NCP emerged from what he described as a mass uprising, the party is now focused on consolidating its organisational strength at the grassroots level.

He emphasised that success in local government elections would depend on early preparation, coordination and stronger engagement with communities across the country.

“We believe local government elections may take place soon. Our leaders and activists should start preparing from now. Strengthening our grassroots network is our immediate priority,” he said.

Referring to the party’s performance in the most recent national parliamentary election, Nahid noted that NCP secured six seats.

However, he said the party considers this only a beginning and aims to expand its support base in future elections.

Reflecting on the party’s first year in politics, he said NCP has gained valuable experience and believes it represents a new political alternative.

According to him, democratic reforms, implementation of the “July National Charter,” and upholding the people’s mandate remain central to the party’s agenda.

Nahid also stressed the importance of accountability and justice, saying legal action against those responsible for past abuses is essential for building a democratic and inclusive political system.
