A defamation case against Nasiruddin Patwary, chief coordinator of the National Citizens Party (NCP), has been filed in a Dhaka court over alleged defamatory remarks targeting Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Mirza Abbas.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Hasan Shahadat on Sunday ordered Nasiruddin Patwary to appear before the court on 21 April after recording the statement of the complainant.

The complaint was filed by Ashraful Islam, president of the BNP Ramna Thana unit, through his lawyer Amirul Islam at the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court.

According to the petition, Nasiruddin Patwary allegedly made false, defamatory and threatening statements about Mirza Abbas during the campaign for the 13th parliamentary election and continued publishing similar remarks on social media and online news platforms after the vote.

The complaint states that on 5 March, the plaintiff observed several Facebook posts in which Patwary allegedly made derogatory comments about Abbas. The posts reportedly spread widely across Facebook, YouTube and other online platforms, causing reputational damage to the BNP leader.

The petition further alleges that Patwary intentionally circulated fabricated statements through digital platforms in an attempt to undermine Abbas’s political reputation and career.

Both Mirza Abbas and Nasiruddin Patwary contested the Dhaka-8 constituency in the 12 February parliamentary election.

Mirza Abbas, a member of the BNP National Standing Committee and political adviser to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, won the seat with 56,552 votes, defeating Patwary, who secured 51,572 votes, according to official results.

In the complaint, the plaintiff claimed Patwary continued making defamatory remarks and issuing threats even after losing the election.

The petitioner also requested the court to take legal action against the NCP leader, including issuing an arrest warrant if necessary.

After reviewing the complaint and recording the statement, the court issued a summons ordering Patwary to appear on 21 April to respond to the allegations.

The case centres on charges of defamation, criminal intimidation and insulting remarks, which the complainant claims damaged the reputation of the BNP leader.

Legal proceedings are expected to continue once the accused appears before the court on the scheduled date.
