Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Dr Shafiqur Rahman has called on the nation to observe the Great Independence and National Day on 26 March with due respect and solemnity.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, he reflected on the historic events of 1971, noting that freedom fighters and people from all walks of life united to resist the then ruling authorities in pursuit of democracy, justice, human rights, and freedom of expression.
He said the Liberation War was driven by the ideals of equality, human dignity, and social justice, with the goal of building a nation free from poverty, hunger, unemployment and misrule.
He acknowledged that independence was achieved through immense sacrifice, with millions laying down their lives. However, he remarked that even after 55 years, many of the aspirations of the people remain unrealised.
Referring to the July 2024 Mass Uprising, Dr Shafiqur said it marked the end of what he described as a prolonged period of authoritarian rule.
He noted that the movement, led by students and citizens, paved the way for a national election held in a freer environment and the formation of a new government.
He expressed hope that no future attempts would be made to re-establish authoritarian governance and that citizens would be able to express themselves freely without fear.
He also highlighted public expectations for a corruption-free society where people of all religions and backgrounds can coexist peacefully.
Mentioning the July National Charter 2025, he said most political parties have endorsed it and that a significant portion of the population supports its implementation through a referendum.
He urged the government to take prompt steps towards its execution.
Dr Shafiqur paid tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War and those who were killed or injured during the July uprising, expressing sympathy for their families and wishing recovery for the wounded.
He also noted that the world is currently facing a challenging period due to ongoing global conflicts, including tensions in the Middle East.
Concluding his statement, he extended Independence Day greetings to the nation and prayed for peace, prosperity, and the continued sovereignty of Bangladesh.
