Five individuals were arrested on Thursday following a flash procession organised by the Awami League (AL) in Dhaka’s Agargaon, despite the political party being officially banned after its violent role in the 2024 July Uprising.

The incident occurred as the group attempted to stage a rally in a restricted area of the capital.

According to Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Assistant Commissioner of the Tejgaon Zone Akkas Ali, the procession began around 9:30am near the BTRC building. The rally reportedly involved 15 to 20 members of the banned political party.

As the group proceeded towards the area in front of IDB Bhaban, patrolling officers intervened to prevent any disruption to public order.

Five individuals were subsequently detained by police.

The arrested have been identified as Md Hasan Ali, 43; Zisan Ahmed, 39; Md Raisul Islam Manik, 42; Md Faruk Islam, 36; and Ashik Mohammed, 24.

“Legal action is being taken against those detained in accordance with the law,” Akkas Ali said, emphasising that police remain vigilant against any unauthorised political gatherings that may threaten public safety or disrupt traffic in the city.

The DMP urged citizens to cooperate with authorities and avoid participating in any processions or rallies organised by organisations that were banned due to its ferocious past roles. Police also warned that strict measures would be taken against those attempting to violate the law in the future.

The incident comes amid heightened security measures in the capital, particularly around government offices and major thoroughfares, as authorities continue to monitor political activity closely. The flash procession, though small in scale, was swiftly controlled, and normalcy was restored in the area following the arrests.
