The 11-party alliance led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has declared plans to hold a rally and protest march in Dhaka on Saturday, pressing for constitutional reforms to implement the outcome of the referendum.
The programme is set to begin at 5pm at the north gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, according to leaders of the alliance.
Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Hamidur Rahman Azad made the announcement following a meeting of the alliance’s liaison committee on Thursday.
He said the opposition would also launch campaigns to mobilise public support through leaflet distribution and outreach activities ahead of the rally.
Hamidur Rahman Azad further noted that the alliance intends to organise seminars and discussions focusing on the implementation of the referendum and the July Charter.
He warned that if the government continues to disregard public opinion, the opposition may announce more stringent programmes. A decision on future actions is expected after a meeting of top alliance leaders scheduled for 7 April.
Criticising the government, Hamidur Rahman Azad alleged that the ruling party has taken a stance against the referendum, calling it a deviation from earlier commitments made during the formation of the interim government and subsequent elections.
He also accused the government of following a similar path to previous administrations, referring to the 15th amendment as a step toward authoritarian governance.
Touching on the ongoing fuel situation, the Jamaat leader claimed that despite official assurances, fuel remains difficult to obtain at petrol stations.
He further questioned the government’s position, citing proposals such as holding online classes to reduce transport costs as contradictory to claims of stable conditions.
