State Minister for Planning Zonayed Saki has resigned from his position as chief coordinator of Ganosanhati Andolan, citing the need to maintain a clear separation between his responsibilities in government and party affairs.
He announced his decision at a press conference held at the party’s central office in Hatirpool in the capital on Saturday.
Explaining the move, Zonayed Saki said stepping aside from the party’s top post would allow him to focus more effectively on his duties as a member of the government.
Following his resignation, party leader Dewan Abdur Rashid Nilu has been appointed as the acting chief coordinator.
Zonayed Saki had most recently been re-elected to the position during the party’s fifth national conference held on 3 November last year in Savar, where a new 55-member executive committee was also formed.
In the 13th parliamentary elections held on 12 February this year, Zonayed Saki contested as a candidate of the BNP-led alliance and won the Brahmanbaria-6 (Banchharampur) constituency using the party’s electoral symbol “Mathal.” His victory marked a significant milestone in his political career, bringing him into the national legislature.
After the election, he was inducted into the cabinet of the government led by Tarique Rahman, initially serving as state minister for finance and planning. He later continued in government as the state minister for planning following changes in ministerial responsibilities.
Party insiders said the decision reflects an effort to maintain organisational balance and avoid conflicts between party leadership roles and executive responsibilities within the government.
