Leader of Opposition in Parliament and Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has accused the current government of fostering renewed fascism in Bangladesh, pointing to the rejection of the popular will expressed in a recent referendum as a sign of democratic erosion.
Speaking at the Jatiya Ganotantric Party’s founding anniversary at the Jatiya Press Club on Monday, Dr Shafiqur warned that opposition forces would resist any authoritarian trends and work to restore democratic norms.
Framing his appeal in inclusive terms, the Jamaat leader urged all citizens to join what he described as a people’s movement transcending party lines.
“This struggle is for justice and truth, belonging to the entire nation, not any single political faction,” he said.
Shafiqur Rahman sharply criticised the current parliament, alleging it has ignored the aspirations of the public.
He announced that his party would bypass parliamentary procedures and appeal directly to citizens to enforce the referendum verdict.
The Opposition Leader described the initiative as the first phase of a broader movement aimed at safeguarding the welfare of the nation’s 18 crore people.
He also implied that parties lacking internal democratic practices -apparently referencing the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, which holds a two-thirds majority - cannot be trusted to protect democracy or national security.
Shafiqur claimed that the referendum showed 70 per cent public support for the ‘Yes’ position, presenting it as a clear mandate from the people.
He reaffirmed his party’s unwavering commitment to the referendum outcome and pledged to pursue its implementation through sustained civic action.
