BNP Senior Joint Secretary General and Political Adviser to the Prime Minister Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Tuesday urged coordinated efforts from the government, health authorities, medical professionals and all stakeholders to prevent the measles outbreak in Bangladesh.

Speaking at a rally organised by the BNP to mark World Health Day 2026, Rizvi warned that the spread of misinformation, including anti-vaccine campaigns and superstition, has increased the risk of the disease resurfacing. He stressed that without timely and effective intervention, the situation could deteriorate further.

The rally began from the Central Shaheed Minar, and it ended on the National Press Club premises in the capital. Apart from the leaders and activists of the party, healthcare professionals also participated in the rally.

Highlighting the significance of the day, Rizvi said doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers play a crucial role in safeguarding public health.

Referring to this year’s theme, "Science in Healthcare and Protecting Everyone’s Life,” he emphasised the importance of science-based healthcare to ensure proper diagnosis and effective treatment.

He pointed out that vaccine hesitancy and misinformation are not only challenges in developing countries but are also seen in more advanced nations.

Rizvi also noted that people expect swift and effective responses from the government during health crises.

He called for stronger public health systems and greater prioritisation of healthcare to protect citizens.

Despite major scientific advancements globally, he said preventable diseases like measles still pose a threat, particularly to children.

However, he expressed confidence that the country’s medical community would respond effectively to contain such outbreaks.

Several BNP leaders, healthcare workers, and representatives from nursing institutions were present at the event.

BNP Health Affairs Secretary Dr Rafiqul Islam, Volunteer Affairs Secretary Mir Sarfat Ali Sipu, Cultural Affairs Secretary and actor Ashrafuzzaman Ujjal, Co-Organising Secretary Professor Aminul Islam, Assistant Planning Affairs Secretary and physician Sagar Khan, as well as healthcare workers and representatives from nursing institutes, were present at the event.
