Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has condemned what it described as attacks on Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) leaders in Dhaka, as well as assaults on Islami Chhatra Shibir activists in Pabna and Cumilla.
In a statement issued on Friday, the party’s Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar criticised the incidents, which he alleged were carried out by leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal. He described the attacks as “barbaric and cowardly”.
He said the alleged assault on DUCSU leaders inside Shahbagh Police Station involved Literature and Cultural Affairs Secretary Musaddiq Ali Ibne Mohammad, Social Welfare Secretary AB Zubair, and student leader Fatima Tasnim Zuma. He called the incident “deeply unfortunate and unacceptable”.
“This kind of attack on elected representatives of students has no place in a democratic and civilised society,” he said.
Porwar also alleged that a false post had been circulated using a fake account in the name of Dhaka University student Abdullah Al Mahmud. He claimed that despite denying involvement, the student was threatened and later went to Shahbagh Police Station to file a general diary, which was not immediately accepted.
According to him, when DUCSU leaders went to the police station to address the issue, they were attacked and seriously injured in the presence of police.
He expressed concern over the role of law enforcement, alleging that officers acted passively during the incident. He described this as “highly condemnable”.
The Jamaat leader further claimed that Islami Chhatra Shibir activists were attacked during a procession at Ishwardi Government College in Pabna on Thursday afternoon, leaving several people injured. Later that night, he said, at least 20 leaders and activists were injured in another incident at Cumilla Polytechnic Institute.
He said the incidents suggested a planned attempt to destabilise educational institutions and urged authorities to ensure peaceful coexistence among student organisations.
Porwar called for the immediate identification, arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible for the attack on the DUCSU leaders at Shahbagh Police Station.
He also wished the injured a speedy recovery and urged all sides to exercise restraint and avoid political violence.
