BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has strongly condemned remarks made by Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman, rejecting his claim that the BNP came to power through “engineering.”

Speaking at a press conference held at the party’s Nayapaltan office in the capital on Saturday noon, Mirza Fakhrul said he was deeply hurt after seeing the comments in a news report.

“I saw a news report today that deeply hurt me. The Jamaat-e-Islami ameer said the BNP came to power through engineering,” he said, adding that such remarks reflect an unhealthy political mindset.

Fakhrul firmly rejected the allegation, stating that the BNP had assumed power through what he described as a neutral election conducted under an interim government.

He claimed the party secured 213 seats in that election, which he said had been recognised by international observers and media outlets as free and fair.

“So, we strongly reject this statement. We not only reject it but also condemn it and express our anger,” he said.

He further alleged that attempts were being made to create confusion and division within the political landscape by spreading misinformation against the BNP.

Referring to developments after 5 August, Mirza Fakhrul said efforts to strengthen democracy were being undermined by propaganda, including on social media ahead of elections.

He also alleged that some groups were trying to destabilise the political environment through coordinated misinformation campaigns.

He dismissed what he described as attempts to distance the BNP from the public, saying such efforts had failed.

Mirza Fakhrul also criticised actions aimed at stirring unrest in student politics, calling for resistance against such moves.

Expressing optimism, he said politically conscious citizens of the country have always rejected divisive politics and will continue to do so in the future.
