Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Opposition Leader in Parliament Dr Shafiqur Rahman has accused the BNP of misleading the public by opposing key state reforms, including measures he claimed the party had previously supported.
He made the remarks while addressing a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka on Saturday afternoon.
The event was attended by families of those killed and injured in the July Uprising, along with political activists and opposition leaders.
Dr Shafiqur Rahman said the BNP was “deceiving the nation” by opposing reforms necessary for establishing good governance and ensuring what he described as true democratic freedom.
He alleged that the party had lost consistency in its political stance and was now following what he termed the path of the “fugitive fascist.”
He also strongly criticised recent incidents of violence, including attacks on Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) representatives inside a police station and an assault on Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Masum Mustafa in Netrakona.
He questioned the overall state of law and order in the country.
Calling for peace in educational institutions, the Jamaat chief said campuses should be places for “notebooks and pens, not machetes or axes,” warning that continued instability could trigger a repeat of the July movement.
At the same rally, Rokeya Begum, mother of July martyr Jabir Ibrahim and a candidate for a reserved women’s seat, spoke on behalf of affected families. Injured activist Atikul Islam demanded implementation of what he called the “70 per cent people’s verdict,” warning of consequences if public demands were ignored.
Jagpa Chairperson Tasmiya Pradhan accused the government of insulting July martyrs in Parliament.
Several opposition leaders, including NCP lawmaker Nahid Islam, Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar, and LDP Chairman Col (retd) Oli Ahmad, also addressed the gathering.
