Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Dr Shafiqur Rahman left Dhaka early Saturday on a seven-day official visit to Japan.

According to a party spokesperson, he departed from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at around 3 am.

Dr Shafiqur Rahman is accompanied by Saiful Alam Khan Milon, a member of the party’s central executive council and MP for Dhaka-12 constituency, and Barrister Mir Ahmad Bin Quasem Arman, the Jamaat ameer’ foreign affairs adviser and MP for Dhaka-14.

During the visit, the Opposition Leader is expected to hold a series of courtesy meetings and exchange views with senior Japanese officials and other key stakeholders. Although the detailed agenda has not been made public, party sources indicated that discussions may focus on issues of mutual interest between the two countries.

This visit is considered one of the most notable overseas engagements for Dr Shafiqur Rahman since he assumed the role of opposition leader following the recent national elections.

He is scheduled to return to Dhaka on 9 May after completing the tour.
