The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Monday announced a seven-day programme to commemorate the martyrdom anniversary of its founder and former President of the country Ziaur Rahman.

The programmes will begin on 25 May and continue until 1 June, according to BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, who disclosed the schedule during a press conference at the party’s central office in Naya Paltan in Dhaka.

Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, who also serves as an adviser to the Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman, said the party had arranged a series of observances to honour the memory and political legacy of Ziaur Rahman. He noted that the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha holidays fall within the scheduled period, and for that reason some programmes may be observed a day or two later in different places if necessary.

He said the party leadership considered the festival period while finalising the schedule so that leaders, activists and supporters across the country could participate conveniently in the commemorative events.

As part of the announced programme, BNP will organise a discussion meeting at Ramna in the capital at 2pm on 31 May under the party’s central initiative. Senior party leaders and invited guests are expected to attend the event and discuss the life, political contributions and leadership of Ziaur Rahman.

The BNP traditionally observes the anniversary every year through various political, social and religious programmes across the country, including discussions, prayers and other commemorative events involving party leaders and supporters.
