Opposition Leader in Parliament and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has expressed concern over what he described as a setback to the independence of the judicial secretariat, questioning the government’s commitment to ensuring an autonomous judiciary.
In a post shared on his verified Facebook account on Wednesday, Dr Shafiqur Rahman alleged that the idea of an independent judicial secretariat had effectively been undermined, using strong language to describe the development.
He wrote that an “independent judicial secretariat has met an untimely death,” adding that this, according to him, became evident the previous day. The remark, he suggested, reflects a broader trend of increasing political influence over the judicial system.
Dr Shafiqur Rahman further claimed that the move signals an attempt to establish “absolute political influence and control” over the administration of justice.
He also pointed out that the same authorities had earlier pledged to ensure a fully independent and strengthened judiciary, raising questions about consistency between commitments and current actions.
In the concluding part of his statement, the Jamaat leader criticised what he called a negative political practice in the country. He said, “I hate this malpractice. One day, this culture will change on the soil of Bengal, Insha’Allah.”
His remarks have generated discussion in political circles, particularly among those closely following ongoing debates on judicial reforms and institutional independence. However, no official government response to his comments was immediately available.
The issue has added to the broader political discourse surrounding governance, institutional autonomy and reform initiatives in the country’s justice system.
