Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that Bangladesh’s political environment is being damaged by the misuse of social media and the spread of misleading propaganda.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party Secretary General and Local Government Minister made the remarks while speaking as chief guest at a memorial meeting held at the National Press Club on Friday.

He said the Bangladesh Nationalist Party is not a revolutionary force but a liberal democratic political party committed to protecting people’s rights, welfare and democratic values.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the misuse of social media, along with the deliberate use of offensive language, has seriously weakened the space for constructive political debate in the country.

He alleged that a planned conspiracy is under way to undermine democratic gains achieved through years of political struggle and mass movements and to create instability. He called for vigilance in identifying those responsible and safeguarding democracy during what he described as a critical period.

Reiterating the party’s position, he said the Bangladesh Nationalist Party is a liberal democratic party focused on public rights and democratic principles, not a revolutionary movement.

He also said that an anti-democratic force had emerged that does not believe in democracy or the rights of the people. He urged pro-democracy forces to unite and resist such elements.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party Vice Chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu and other senior leaders were present at the event.
