Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has sought closer cooperation from Turkey in addressing the long-standing Rohingya crisis, alongside broader collaboration in economic development and key national sectors.
The appeal was made following a meeting between a delegation of Jamaat leaders and visiting Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan at a hotel in Dhaka. The meeting lasted for about an hour and focused on issues of bilateral interest, including the Rohingya situation and potential areas of partnership.
Jamaat Ameer and Opposition Leader in Parliament Dr Shafiqur Rahman briefed reporters after the meeting, saying that the delegation requested Turkey’s continued and more active involvement in helping find a permanent solution to the Rohingya crisis. He also highlighted discussions on expanding cooperation in areas such as economic recovery, governance, education, healthcare and defence.
A seven-member delegation led by Dr Shafiqur Rahman participated in the talks. The group included Nayeb-e-Ameer and Deputy Opposition Leader Dr Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, Secretary General Mia Ghulam Parwar, Assistant Secretary General Rafiqul Islam Khan, among other senior leaders.
Dr Shafiqur Rahman described Turkey as a “tested friend” of Bangladesh, noting that Ankara has consistently extended support to the country in the past. He expressed hope that Turkey would play a more active diplomatic and humanitarian role in resolving the Rohingya crisis and supporting a durable settlement.
The delegation also emphasised the importance of strengthening economic ties and encouraging Turkish investment in Bangladesh to support national development priorities and institutional reform efforts.
