Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Saturday called for the implementation of the people’s referendum verdict and the July Charter, warning that his party would take its position directly to the public if the issue remained unresolved in parliament.
Addressing a divisional rally organised by the 11-party alliance at the Khulna Circuit House ground, he said efforts would first be made to resolve the matter through parliamentary processes. However, he added that if no solution emerged, they would engage with people across the country.
“Where we do not need the Speaker’s permission to speak, we will speak with the people. A mass awakening will take place across the country,” he said.
Addressing young people, Dr Shafiqur Rahman said they had played a decisive role in removing what he described as fascism through the July Revolution. He urged them to remain prepared for further action if necessary.
“You removed fascism through the July Revolution. Now, if necessary, be prepared for another inevitable revolution to remove neo-fascism,” he said.
He said the student-led movement was not intended to bring any individual, family or group to power. Instead, he said, its objective was to establish an independent, sovereign, accountable and humane Bangladesh.
“We do not want any chaos in the country. But we will not bow down to injustice, corruption, extortion, occupation or domination,” he added.
The rally was organised to demand implementation of the referendum verdict, measures to reduce public suffering and action to control commodity prices.
Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar chaired the event. Former Colonel Dr Oli Ahmed and Maulana Mamunul Haque attended as special guests.
