The Awami League, whose political activities remain banned, may attempt to create unrest around its founding anniversary on Tuesday, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said.
Speaking to journalists at the Secretariat on Monday, the home minister said security agencies had not seen a deterioration in the overall law and order situation. However, he stressed that the authorities must remain alert at all times.
Responding to questions about potential sabotage and the deployment of the army in six districts, he said there were concerns based on what he described as “malicious activities” by the party.
“We have seen that they have taken up activities such as processions and meetings in a few districts. Based on that, we felt they might attempt to create instability. Considering this, we have instructed all our forces to remain alert, as is always the case,” Salahuddin Ahmed said.
He added that army personnel had been deployed from Monday until 30 June under the Aid to the Civil Power Act. The deployment covers Dhaka Metropolitan, Chattogram Metropolitan, Narayanganj and Gazipur metropolitan areas, along with two additional districts, to help address any potential subversive activities.
Officials said the move is intended as a precautionary security measure ahead of the anniversary period, with law enforcement agencies maintaining heightened vigilance across key urban centres.
