Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Tuesday announced a month-long programme to mark the second anniversary of the July Mass Uprising, with events planned across the country throughout July and early August.

The party's secretary general, Mia Golam Parwar, unveiled the programme at a press conference held at the Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka.

He said Jamaat leaders would meet the families of those killed, injured and permanently disabled during the July Uprising in Dhaka from July 2 to 9. Similar programmes will be held across the country between July 18 and 31.

During the commemorative period, the party will organise remembrance events, discussion meetings and special prayers at locations associated with the uprising. Separate discussion meetings will also be arranged by Jamaat's two Dhaka metropolitan units on July 16.

Outlining the programme for August, Mia Golam Parwar said processions would be held in metropolitan cities, districts and upazilas nationwide on August 1. Labour organisations affiliated with the party will organise special events from August 2 to 4.

He said the 11-party alliance would hold rallies and processions in Dhaka, as well as at district and upazila headquarters across the country, on August 5 to mark July Mass Uprising Day.

The secretary general added that Jamaat leaders and activists would also participate in programmes organised by the party's women's wing, student organisations and various forums representing those involved in the July movement.

Alongside the commemorative programme, the party placed three demands. It called for faster trials of those accused of the July killings and crimes against humanity, justice for the killers of Sharif Osman Hadi, and the convening of a Reform Council session to implement the July Charter and the public mandate expressed through the referendum.
