Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has accused the government of favouring constituencies represented by ruling party lawmakers in the allocation of grants and development assistance, while opposition-held areas are being overlooked.
Speaking to journalists before attending a party conference in Netrokona on Friday, he said that his party had observed what it described as an imbalance in the distribution of public resources.
He alleged that constituencies represented by members of the governing party had received various grants and forms of development support, whereas constituencies represented by opposition MPs had not been given comparable assistance.
Shafiqur Rahman also said, "The party viewed the situation with concern and had already raised the matter in parliament.”
He added that although he could not predict how long the current government would remain in office, the party believed there were already indications that warranted attention.
Calling for equal treatment of all citizens, the Jamaat Ameer stated, "Any government has a responsibility to serve the entire country rather than particular political parties, regions or groups.”
He argued that those in power were accountable to the whole nation and should ensure that public resources were distributed fairly, regardless of political representation.
The opposition leader said his party would continue to speak out whenever it believed discrimination was taking place, adding that political differences should not become an obstacle to national development.
The remarks were made during a press briefing chaired by Maulana Sadeq Ahmed Haris, the Ameer of the Netrokona district Jamaat-e-Islami. District and central party leaders were also present at the event.
