The High Court on Thursday upheld the nomination of BNP candidate Sarowar Alamgir for the Chattogram-2 constituency, making absolute a rule it had issued earlier declaring his candidacy valid.
The verdict was delivered by a High Court bench comprising Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Md Ashif Hasan.
The Election Commission had initially accepted Sarowar Alamgir’s nomination papers. However, his rival candidate from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Muhammad Nurul Amin, challenged the nomination, alleging that the BNP candidate was a loan defaulter. Following the appeal, the Election Commission cancelled his candidacy.
Sarowar Alamgir subsequently challenged the decision before the High Court. On January 27, 2026, the court ordered the restoration of his nomination for the Chattogram-2 seat.
Muhammad Nurul Amin later sought leave to appeal against that order. The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court granted leave and directed that, if Sarowar Alamgir won the election, the declaration of his result would remain suspended until the appeal was finally resolved.
Following the Appellate Division’s directive, the High Court reheard the matter and on Thursday made its earlier rule absolute, confirming the validity of Sarowar Alamgir’s nomination.
Senior lawyers AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Ahsanul Karim and Nasir Uddin Ashim represented Sarowar Alamgir during the hearing. Advocate Mohammad Shishir Manir appeared for Muhammad Nurul Amin, while Advocate Raju Miah represented the Election Commission.
