Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has replaced the secretary general of its Kushtia district unit after enforcing a central party policy that prevents male members employed at women’s educational institutions from holding organisational responsibilities.
The change follows a directive issued by the party’s central leadership, which states that male members, known within the organisation as Rukon, who work at women’s educational institutions are not eligible to serve in responsible party positions.
Kushtia district Jamaat Ameer Principal Khandaker AKM Ali Mohsin confirmed the decision to reporters on Monday night.
Under the new arrangement, Enamul Haque, who previously served as Ameer of Kushtia city Jamaat, has taken over as district secretary, replacing Sujauddin Joardar.
In a statement released on Monday, the party said the appointment was approved unanimously during a meeting of the Kushtia district executive council on 13 July, following instructions from the central leadership.
Speaking to reporters, Sujauddin Joardar said the party’s constitution does not allow members employed at women’s educational institutions to remain as Rukon or hold key organisational posts.
He added that the policy is being implemented across the country in line with the central committee’s decision and said he accepted the change without objection.
Sujauddin explained that he had been working as a teacher at Bagowan Dr Fazlul Haque Girls’ College before becoming district secretary.
At that time, he said, the relevant constitutional provision had been relaxed, allowing him to continue serving in the leadership role.
He also said that if he were to leave his teaching post in the future, he could become eligible to return to his previous organisational position.
Newly appointed district secretary Enamul Haque said he had accepted the responsibility after receiving unanimous support from the district leadership.
District Ameer Khandaker AKM Ali Mohsin said the central directive has affected seven party members across Bangladesh who were serving in similar organisational roles while employed at women’s educational institutions.
He said the district executive council unanimously selected Enamul Haque to fill the vacancy immediately.
