Jamaat-e-Islami Member of Parliament Golam Rasul's house in Jashore was attacked on Tuesday after a dispute involving the lawmaker and his daughter at a local madrasa escalated into violence, according to police and local residents.
The incident took place at around 11:00 local time at the MP’s residence in the Nilganj area of Jashore town. Police officers were deployed to the scene shortly afterwards and remained there to provide security for Golam Rasul and his family, who stayed inside the property.
Golam Rasul represents the Jashore-4 constituency, covering Bagharpara and Abhaynagar, and also serves as the district ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami.
According to police, the latest unrest followed a long-running disagreement over an access road leading to Al Madrasatus Shariyah and a neighbouring mosque situated opposite the MP’s residence.
Officers said an argument broke out on Monday between the MP’s daughter, Anannya, and several students of the madrasa. Police mediated the dispute at the time.
However, tensions resurfaced on Tuesday morning when Golam Rasul and his daughter returned to the madrasa and became involved in another confrontation with teachers and guardians.
Witnesses alleged that Anannya assaulted a local woman, identified as Reksona, leaving her with a head injury. They also claimed she later became involved in a confrontation with another guardian, Nasir Uddin.
The allegations fuelled anger among local residents, who later gathered outside the MP’s residence and attacked and vandalised the property.
Some protesters also accused the family of threatening to close the madrasa and called for a full investigation into the incident, urging authorities to take legal action against those found responsible.
In a Facebook Live broadcast following the attack, Golam Rasul apologised for the events and said the disagreement centred on a road that his family had purchased and wished to keep accessible.
“I am deeply saddened by the situation. I apologise for what happened. We want to live peacefully with everyone,” he said.
The MP also stated that his daughter has been receiving treatment for a mental illness at medical facilities in Bangladesh as well as hospitals in Hyderabad, India.
He expressed concern about the safety of his family, alleging that some individuals had stockpiled gunpowder and warning that there was a risk his house could be set on fire.
Jashore Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Masum Khan confirmed that local residents attacked the residence after the renewed dispute.
“Police are at the scene and have provided security to the MP and his family,” he said, adding that residents were demanding justice over the incident.
Authorities have not announced any arrests, and the circumstances surrounding the confrontation remain under investigation.
