LONDON,

Manchester United have sacked manager Ruben Amorim just 14 months after his appointment, the Premier League club announced on Monday.

In a statement, United said the Portuguese coach had left his role, adding that the club’s leadership had “reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change”.

“This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish,” the statement said.

United are currently sixth in the league table following a 1–1 draw away to Leeds on Sunday.

Amorim’s departure comes a day after a tense post-match press conference in which the 40-year-old insisted he was Manchester United’s manager rather than simply a coach, and urged the club’s scouting department and sporting director “to do their job”.

The former Sporting Lisbon boss had previously hinted at frustrations behind the scenes, declining to clarify remarks he had made about the club’s transfer strategy in the build-up to the Leeds match.

Amorim was appointed in November 2024 and guided United to the Europa League final in Bilbao in May, where they were beaten by Tottenham Hotspur. Despite that run, the club endured a difficult domestic campaign, finishing 15th in the Premier League last season.

Manchester United have not yet announced who will take charge of the team on an interim or permanent basis.
