Indian bowler Mohammed Siraj was hours away from a holiday he had been planning for weeks. Germany was on the itinerary, followed by a long-anticipated stop in Spain to watch Real Madrid play on 15 February. He had even asked the Indian team’s trainer not to contact him during his break.

Less than a day later, Siraj was charging in at the Wankhede Stadium, leading India’s bowling attack in a World Cup match.

What unfolded was a dramatic reversal of plans that turned a vacation-bound fast bowler into an unlikely match-winner. Siraj, who had intended to spend his downtime with friends in Hyderabad before flying to Europe, suddenly became central to India’s win over the USA.

The twist came just a day before the tournament began, when pacer Harshit Rana was ruled out with an injury. Siraj, who had not featured in a T20 International since July 2024, received an unexpected phone call that he initially dismissed as a prank.

“Suddenly Surya bhai (Suryakumar Yadav) called me and said, ‘Get ready, pack your bags and come,’” Siraj said after the match. “I told him, ‘Don’t joke with me, this can’t be real.’”

Reality struck moments later when national selector Pragyan Ojha rang to confirm the emergency call-up.

With Jasprit Bumrah unavailable due to fever, the responsibility on Siraj’s shoulders was immediate and heavy. But the fast bowler responded with composure and intensity, defending India’s modest total of 161 by picking up three wickets for 29 runs in his four overs.

As his European plans, including the Real Madrid match, were shelved and Ramadan approached, Siraj took the whirlwind episode in stride.

“What God has written cannot be changed,” he said. “I came, I played, and everything happened as it was meant to.”
