Barcelona will face Villarreal on Saturday at Camp Nou with their La Liga title lead under scrutiny, as concerns grow over the form of strikers Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres.
Barcelona currently sit top of La Liga by one point and have scored a league-high 67 goals this season. However, the team’s attacking output has become increasingly distributed, with no single forward dominating the scoring charts.
Coach Hansi Flick has alternated between Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres as the central striker. Lewandowski, 37, has scored five goals in his last 18 appearances across all competitions and has appeared less mobile in recent matches. Ferran Torres, 25, has managed three goals in his last 15 games and has struggled to influence build-up play consistently.
“With so many matches, rotation at striker is natural, and I think Ferran and I can benefit from the current situation,” Lewandowski told Polish outlet Pilka Nozna. “When you play 90 minutes every three days, your whole life is about recovery. Now the balance is a little better. "I'm tired, but I’m not worn out."
Despite leading the scoring charts as a team, Barcelona’s goals have come from multiple sources. Ten players have scored at least two goals, and Torres leads the squad with 12. In contrast, Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé tops La Liga’s scoring table with 23 goals and has 13 in the UEFA Champions League.
Barcelona’s defensive vulnerabilities have also been exposed this season, particularly against teams exploiting their high defensive line. However, the Catalan club managed to offset similar weaknesses last season by maintaining a strong attacking return en route to a domestic treble.
Wingers Lamine Yamal and Raphinha remain consistent attacking outlets. Marcus Rashford, currently on loan from Manchester United, has primarily operated on the left flank, contributing 10 goals and 13 assists in 34 appearances across all competitions. Flick has not regularly deployed Rashford as a central striker, although squad rotation may prompt tactical adjustments.
Barcelona enter the match after a relatively lighter schedule, with Flick highlighting the importance of rest ahead of a demanding fixture list.
“It’s important that we have these two weeks to rest a little bit but also focus on the next match against Villarreal,” Flick said. “That will be a tough match.”
Villarreal sit 10 points behind Barcelona. While their title ambitions have faded, a victory at Camp Nou could narrow the gap and reinvigorate their campaign.
Elsewhere in La Liga, Real Madrid host Getafe on Monday, one point behind Barcelona. Atletico Madrid, with forward Alexander Sorloth scoring 10 goals in 2026 across all competitions, face Real Oviedo on Saturday.
Real Betis midfielder Pablo Fornals will also be in focus in the Seville derby against Sevilla on Sunday, following strong performances this season.
