A superb first-half hat-trick from Federico Valverde inspired Real Madrid to a dominant 3-0 victory over Manchester City on Wednesday in a surprise Champions League last-16 first-leg rout.

Despite being shorn of several key players, including Kylian Mbappé, Los Blancos capitalised on the Uruguayan midfielder’s stunning treble—netted within a clinical 22-minute spell—to crush Pep Guardiola’s side at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Vinícius Júnior missed a second-half penalty that would have further extended the lead, yet Madrid head to Manchester for the second leg next Tuesday with a significant advantage.

While Madrid are record 15-time winners, their inconsistent form this season gave little indication they would produce such a commanding display against the 2023 champions. City had previously beaten Madrid during the league phase and appeared the stronger side on paper, but the Spanish giants produced their most convincing performance of the campaign when it mattered most.

Tactical surprises

Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa, missing injured stars Mbappé, Jude Bellingham, and Rodrygo Goes, handed a start to 18-year-old midfielder Thiago Pitarch. Conversely, Guardiola opted for an adventurous line-up, seeking to exploit Madrid’s recent defensive frailties by naming only two central midfielders and leaving Phil Foden and Rayan Cherki on the bench.

The visitors started brightly, with Champions League debutant Antoine Semenyo forcing a save from Thibaut Courtois, while Trent Alexander-Arnold worked hard to keep Erling Haaland quiet. However, the tide turned in the 20th minute when Courtois launched a long ball toward Valverde. City’s Nico O’Reilly misjudged the flight, allowing Valverde to round Gianluigi Donnarumma and roll the ball home.

Seven minutes later, the Madrid captain doubled the lead, coolly drilling past Donnarumma after being played in by Vinícius Júnior.

A career first

Valverde, who had spent much of the early season deployed at right-back under Xabi Alonso, appears revitalised following Arbeloa’s January arrival. Having scored a late winner against Celta Vigo last Friday, the 27-year-old completed his first career hat-trick before the interval on Wednesday with the pick of the goals—flicking Brahim Díaz’s pass over Marc Guéhi before smashing home a volley.

City continued to struggle after the break. Although Donnarumma redeemed himself slightly by saving a low Vinícius Júnior penalty, the visitors could find no way through. Erling Haaland was kept entirely anonymous by Antonio Rüdiger and Dean Huijsen, eventually being substituted as City chased a goal in vain.

Courtois ensured a clean sheet with a brilliant late reaction save from O’Reilly, leaving the Premier League champions with a mountain to climb in the return leg.
